Common Midfoot Condtions

Common Midfoot Issues

The midfoot region contains 5 bones: the medial, middle, and lateral cuneiforms, navicular, and cuboid. This area helps form the arch of the foot. Midfoot conditions can involve the bone or tendinous structures in this region. Examples include plantar fasciitis, midfoot arthritis, tears of the surrounding tendons, and nerve entrapment issues. These issues can be treated with rehabilitation or orthotic issues. If nonoperative treatment does not alleviate symptoms, surgery may be indicated. If you have pain in your midfoot region, then you should be evaluated by one of our orthopedic trained, foot and ankle surgeons.

Evaluation & Diagnosis

At OrthoSouth, our skilled and experienced orthopedic specialists, utilize a variety of tests to thoroughly assess foot injuries and pain. Routinely, we employ X-rays to provide a comprehensive 2-dimensional view of the bones. For a more detailed 3-dimensional perspective, we may recommend advanced imaging techniques. MRI scans offer specific insights into muscles, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage, while CT scans provide enhanced resolution of bones and joint alignment. Electromyography and nerve conduction studies are used to evaluate nerve-related issues. Additionally, PET scans, a specialized type of CT scan, are used for tumor evaluation and other purposes.

Please review these videos for more information about each of these tests.

Anesthesia Concerns

Many of our patients have questions about anesthesia when preparing for surgery. For foot and ankle surgeries, we use a combination of anesthesia methods to ensure optimal pain control and comfort. In collaboration with you and your anesthesiologist, we will choose the combination that provides the best comfort and safety during the perioperative period, taking into account your medical history and personal preferences. Please watch the videos below to learn more about the different anesthetic options available.
