MRI SERVICES - HOW AN MRI WORKS

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a diagnostic exam that uses a combination of a large magnet, radiofrequencies and a computer to produce detailed images of organs and structures within the body, such as bones, joints and soft tissue. The MRI machine is a cylindrical (tube-shaped) device in which the patient is placed. It creates a strong magnetic field around the patient and pulses of radio waves are generated. These signals are received by a computer which analyzes and converts the information into an image, which then appears on a viewing monitor.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR AN MRI

The time required for an MRI scan is typically 30 – 60 minutes, depending on the part of the body being scanned.

Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your exam. You may eat or drink normally, although it is best to limit your caffeine intake.

• Dress in comfortable clothing.
• Do not wear jewelry or any metal items on clothing or in hair.
• If prescribed medication for the procedure, bring it with you and notify the front desk upon arrival.

Note: If you require medication, another person must accompany you during the procedure and drive you home.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING AN MRI

Imaging takes place inside of a large tube-like structure, open on both ends. You will be properly positioned by the MRI technologist. The technologist will then place an MRI coil around the part of the body to be scanned. Like an antenna, the coil will need to be placed as close as possible to the area of interest to ensure optimal signal and image quality. The technologist will then move the table slowly into the system and ask that you lie as still as possible to produce the best image. During the scan, you will hear a gentle tapping sound from inside the scanner. It will vary in rhythm as it acquires an image.

OrthoSouth will follow up with you regarding the results of your MRI.
