Sam E. Murrell, MD

Sam E. Murrell, MD is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic spine surgeon at OrthoSouth who treats neck pain, upper and mid-back pain, low back pain, and disorders of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. He uses a multidisciplinary approach to spine care, helping many patients improve with conservative treatment and less-invasive surgical options before considering more complex procedures. Dr. Murrell sees patients at OrthoSouth in Memphis-Briarcrest, Germantown, and Hernando.

When surgery is needed, Dr. Murrell brings advanced experience in orthopaedic spine surgery and complex spinal reconstruction. His approach is built around careful diagnosis, thoughtful treatment planning, and matching each patient with the least invasive effective option whenever possible, while still offering high-level surgical expertise for more complex spine conditions.

Dr. Murrell currently serves as the Governor's appointed medical representative to the Tennessee Worker's Compensation Advisory Council. He is also a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery Board of Councilors. Dr. Murrell is a past President of the Tennessee Orthopaedic Society.

A former varsity oarsman at Harvard, Dr. Murrell enjoys working with student athletes as team physician at St. Agnes and St. Dominic. Dr. Murrell also believes in the importance of giving back to his community and donates his surgical skills to the Church Health Center. He is a member of Second Presbyterian Church.
